On Australia's Gold Coast
Vides of the Penguin Encounter exhibit with King and Gentoo penguins in the snow. The exhibit is chilled to -1 °C and the water is 5 °C.
King Penguins are the second largest penguin species (Emperor Penguins are the largest) reaching a height of 90 cm and weights of 11-16 kg. King Penguins breed on subantarctic islands between 45 and 55°S, at the northern reaches of Antarctica, as well as Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. King penguins eat small fish, and squid and rely less than most Southern Ocean predators on krill and other crustaceans. Fish constitute 80–100% of the diet, except in winter months of July and August, when they make up only 30%. The King Penguin dives to depths of 100–300 meters, spending around 5 minutes submerged.
Gentoo penguins read a height of 50 - 90 cm and breed on many sub-Antarctic islands. Large colonies are located on Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Kerguelen Islands. Gentoos live mainly on crustaceans such as krill, with fish making up only about 15% of the diet. However, they are opportunistic feeders, and around the Falklands are known to take roughly equal proportions of fish.
These Little Penguins (Eudyptula minor also, Little Blue Penguin) are actually found on the Southern Coast of Australia. They are the smallest species of penguin growing to 30-33 cm and 1.5 kg. They feed by hunting fish, squid and other small sea animals. They normally dive just 2m but can dive as deep as 20m and remain underwater as long as 60 seconds.
